Joys of Christmas

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

20111227-091532.jpg

As you can see my family, had a house full of Joys for Christmas!  They were thrilled to come down the stairs first thing in the morning to see all the gifts left under and around the tree for each of them.

Sean and I never wrap gifts early or put them under the tree until after the kids go to bed.  I just don’t like for them to get into things and open things.  I guess you could say I like to have “A LITTLE” control.  So, when they go to bed, they never know if they are going to have any gifts for sure.

Another thing that I am trying to teach my children is what Christmas really is, and what it really IS NOT.  It really is NOT about all the gifts under the tree, or about how much of the junk that they can collect (don’t get me wrong, I love buying things for my kids and husband and seeing the joy on their faces).  However I want them to know more importantly, why we get these gifts.  Why we have Christmas.  I am not a big preacher, I don’t stand out front, and tell people what it is right and wrong for them.  I am however pretty upfront about the blacks and whites of what is right and wrong for me.

Christmas has always had such a special time in my heart.  Do you remember as a mom, how amazing it was to carry your baby within you?  To feel the movement and start developing that bond?  This was your child, your husbands child.  And then your birth comes, and you have this little you laying there, part of both you.  Well, now can you imagine being in a different set of shoes?  A set of shoes, being Mary’s?  Having God’s child, this child of perfection, a child of….  you get it???  I’m speechless.  God made this plan, to send his child in human form, to live among us.  To teach us, and to later on have a life lived for nothing but our greater good.  This entire plan, was nothing more than the very first Christmas gift to us.

We buy all these gifts and try to top last year, and try to outdo ourselves with the last ones.  All for what?  A big smile on the faces of each of our loved ones.  We want them to be so happy, we want them to enjoy every moment with this new THING that we get for them.  I am so glad, that God thought of the GREATEST 1st Christmas gift for me, so many years before I was even thought of, because even now… It puts the VERY LARGEST smile on my face knowing that JESUS was and is my gift.

I have been trying so hard to teach my children that we are celebrating Jesus birthday.  I know that at times it is hard for them to understand.  However, I think they do, and that puts another smile on my face.

So my joys of Christmas are knowing that the birth of Jesus, is 1 of the most exciting things of my life.  And then seeing the kids light up with the joys of Christmas, because of his birth are always going to be special memories for me too!

I hope that you had a Wonderful Christmas, and enjoy the remainder of the year.  And to all the Military families that could not be with your families, I am sorry and am so thankful for all that you have given over the holidays and all year long!  Happy endings to this year, and Happy beggings to the New Year to come!

Dental Cleaning

Yes that lovely time again.  No, I am not like most, I am not going to complain.  I am actually grinning from ear to ear, as my fingers are randomly pouncing all over this key board!  I went for my Dental Cleaning yesterday!

I went 6 months ago to a “NEW” dentist for myself.  I really hate going to all these guys who are all about the money.  Seems like the last few that I have been to over the years have wanted to replace my silver fillings in the very back of my mouth with new natural looking white ones.  Honestly, when you are talking do you open your mouth as wide as you can and lift your head as far back as you can so that everyone can see in the back of your mouth at your teeth?  I don’t, so honestly, I really don’t care what you think about the back of my teeth.  They are in tact, and they are in my mouth, I can chew with no issues, so… I don’t really care that there are these tiny silver little dots in them.  And since the insurance that the military offers me does not cover them to replace them, then I have no intention of paying for them to be replaced until I have too!

So with that being said…. This new Dentist, upon my first visit to him 6 months ago, when done with my cleaning with his tech.  He came in looked at me x-rays and smiled and said “Angela, I am impressed with your teeth. Any questions?”  And he left the room.  The lady in the room started giggling, and looked at me and said that she had not heard him say this to anyone.  This made me feel a bit special.

Anyways upon getting ready yesterday morning for my day and knowing that I was going to have my dentist appointment, I was brushing my teeth and low and behold I thought about the dentists comment.  Oh, crap… I haven’t been flossing nearly the way I should have been, I really honestly have not flossed at all this wk, who has had time to sit for 5 minutes let alone floss their own teeth?  Then yep, my electric toothbrush, decided the battery was going to give out, the juice was gone…  here I am trying to manually brush my teeth with the electic itty bitty toothbrush.  Yes, I finally gave up and did the rest of my time with the normal manual tooth-brush.

So, I go to the dentist office, and guess what, I’m laying there, thinking to myself about what all I still have to get done… and the same lady says… with a giggle “you’re the lady the dr. is so impressed with her teeth.  ooohh,  lets see what he thinks this time”  I thought at that moment are you serious… I forgot to floss… how did I forget to floss, I thought about flossing, I am sitting in the dentist chair where he gave me a huge compliment last time and I didn’t even take the time to floss the junk out of my teeth??  You want me to smile, to see if I can impress him a 2nd time and I didn’t even floss, I am going to flunk and you haven’t even cleaned my teeth….

So, she did the x-rays, he came in and smiled, and she told him about my entire morning and my anxiety about my 2nd time impressing him.  He said, well lets see after the cleaning if there is any plaque or tartar, so they did the cleaning, and he came back in…. and again he smiled.  He was again amazed.  I guess a few bad days does not let me down.

I sure hope that I can instill in my children my good teeth habits.  I know as a child I was a bit obsessive, but I think that it paid off.  So, why do you dislike your dental cleanings?  I love mine!!

Teachers change

We all know that there comes a time each year that your teachers will change?!  Sure we do, but within a few short months?

There was a note sent home the other day from the Principal of the school.  It was telling us that Jaden’s teacher is going to be making a career change.  Her last day just happens to be today, the note also explained that we would have a substitute teacher for a wk and then the new teacher was going to be starting the following wk.  The 2nd note was from his teacher, it basically said the same thing, and that she knew we as parents would have concerns, but this was a oppurtunity that she could not pass up.  She was very kind in her words, and expressed genuine care for each child in this letter.

Sean and I were about ready to die.  Jaden does not handle change like this very well.  In fact the first thing the both of us thought about was the first few wks of kindergarten and how terrible that was for all of us and the teachers.  So, we decided that since we were on limited time we should start talking with Jaden about what was about to be happening at school.

I am absolutely amazed at his teacher, she has taken him and made him so confident.  She has begun preparing him for life since the first day of class.  She holds him truly accountable for each of his actions.  He has had to pay some penalties in her classroom, because of inappropriate behavior.  She always sends home notes.  I have always had open communication with her.  She does not ignore me, or just give me an answer that might settle me.  She tells me the way that it is.

When talking with Jaden about everything that is happening, he says to me “mom, I know.  Ms. Causby already told me.  She is leaving and we are going to have a new teacher, I know!”  He is not a bit worried, he is totally ok with this change, and I am going to give Ms. Causby all of the credit for it.

I sure hope we are lucky enough to always have a teacher that is not only their to be a teacher but also to help each of our children to prepare for other changes as well.  I love that she cared enough to talk with the children on her terms, instead of just jumping ship and leaving it all in the courts of everyone else.

I know that she is a Military spouse, and that they had just located here, so I am pretty sure that they are not leaving the area.  So, all we can do is wish her the best in her new journey.  And wish each of the children an easy transition into the change of teachers!

I am also thankful, that we got these letters to help prepare each of us parents as well!

Spelling tests

Jaden has been having some spelling tests issues since the start of school.  I will not lie that, till now… he has flunked every single test he has taken in spelling class.

The 2nd wk of school, he brought home his spelling list with more than 20 words on it.  2 of the words were…. similar… different.  Seriously, the kid can’t read, they did not even start reading in kindergarten.  However a couple of wks later the teacher sent home a note, that said she was testing not only within the Clark County District guide but wanted to see where the children were academically.  I have no problem with that.  I love that she strives to push the children in their learning.  After all this is why we decided to apply for Jaden to go to this charter school.

Being in the military and living in different areas, and knowing that you are going to eventually be moving.  If you are already living in an area that is known for their low education levels.  Do you really want to keep your child in a school, that just passes them through, and not worry about their education level?  Absolutely not!  We have known many people who’s children have been some of the highest in their classes here, and then when they have moved, they are struggling to just get by in the new schools.  We are hoping that putting Jaden in this charter school, that they will push him to a higher level of education, so that if anything effects him accademically that it is, the new school maybe being behind him!  Great thinking and maybe a bit wishful, but I really would rather him struggle now, to get caught up where he should be, than later on in a higher grade, at a new school where he will have to complete his education.

Anyways, back to the spelling test.  He was doing really good on his test here at home.  And when he brought in this test, with a 51%…. I was totally confused.  How could this possibly happen?  There are 10 spelling words and another 5 bonus words.  She always does the bonus words as the last ones on the test!  She said on the first test that she did this way, that it was optional for the bonus words, we talked with her during the parent teacher confrence about that, and we told Jaden that it is not an option.  He MUST try to do the bonus words.  His spelling average, if VERY rough.  So, let’s attempt to bring it up, RIGHT?

So, when I got this test and out of the spelling (10) words, Jaden missed 2.  “Wow, great job, we are so proud of you Jaden!”  This should have been 80%, right?  I look at the results and he got a 51% because he got 1 bonus word correct… What, how can this possibly be?  I am totally confused as to the math on this one!  So, I had Sean look at it, to see what he thought.  I was going to let it be, and then Sean told me to send a note.  I did!  And thankfully, she adjusted his grade.

I’m glad I sent it in, it will surely help his average in his spelling class!  He has been doing so much better the last couple of wks in school.  I am so proud of him for trying so hard!

Events of the day!,

In the events of my day today, I found that being hurried is definitely no in my strong suit.  I am someone who truly needs routine in their life.  I need organization.  Random mishaps are really not working for me.

Now, don’t get me wrong.  I did not have a bad day.  This is just not one of my ordinary days.  I am very busy on most days, and not that I am in LOVE with everyday, I just like simple, straight forward… ROUTINES!

Our morning started at 6AM, my husband was still here, because he was working in town today, this is not normal.  So, as he was getting ready to crawl out of bed, I hear this screech noise (Schyler’s bedroom door) she decided she could not sleep anymore, so she was going to go down stairs by herself.  I had waited a minute, cause she generally comes into my room to snuggle and go back to sleep, but I got up to find where she was and she was starting down the first flight of stairs.  Then I grabbed her up to my room, where we were able to snuggle till Sean got out of the shower.  I then jumped into the shower… all sounds just a tiny bit of course, and we have only been up for about 20 minutes at this point!

As I am showering, Sean had left (or so I thought)  It was 6:50 and he came into the bathroom and said that the Baby was here.  Her mom does not usually drop her off till 7:05, so I still had plenty of time!  So I hurry with the rest of my shower, thinking that he was just taking care of the baby till I got down stairs, it only took me a couple of minutes, so I came down in my TOWEL.  Low and behold, the mom was still here, and there I stood in all my glory in nothing but a wrapped towel.  About 5 minutes later, as I am still standing there in my towel, both Sean and the mom decide to leave.

Jaden comes down stairs and is getting breakfast ready, and finally things are getting back on track.  I have just over 30 minutes to get both of my girls dressed, Jaden completely ready… and it is now 5 minutes till we have to leave…. I have a doctor’s appointment so we HAD to leave the house about 20 minutes earlier than normal!  I was going to have Jaden waiting at the front door of their school when they opened, rather than when they are getting ready to sound off the final bell like normal.  BUT NOPE, not happening… as I am putting the baby in her car seat, and she is screaming like someone had taken one of her toes and twisted and pulled as hard as they could… I get her all buckled in and puff….

puff comes this odor.  ARE YOU SERIOUS… I need to leave Now, not in another 10 minutes… NOW~~~ Guess the baby decided not only was she going to relieve herself, but she wanted to make sure that she TOTALLY and COMPLETELY relieved herself!  She not only exploded up the back but all in the front also.  Time for a strip down and also, a wipe bath.  I am now almost 20 minutes later than what I needed to be.  I leave the house at 8:30, get him to the school at 8:38, and I make it to the hospital at….. 8:50.  I called Sean who was going to meet me and help take care of the babies, so hopefully my blood pressure would be down for my appointment!  “where did you park?” I asked.  He say ” I am just getting into the truck, I forgot my keys in the building and had to go back in, I will be there soon.”  I have a total of 5 minutes till my appointment at this time!

I get me out, then go to the back of the rig, pull out the mamajama double stroller, that does not fit the baby seat.  Grab Schyler out (who does not have shoes on) grab her shoes, put her in the front of the stroller.  Go to the other side of the car, to get the baby seat and attempt to put it in the back half of the stroller, crawl up into the rig reach over the seat to the back seat to unbuckle Shyla who has now decided that she needs to put her jacket on before getting out of the car.  She then gets out, grabs the stroller, while trying to maneuver my big double duo, and keep the car seat that does not fit, trying to run quickly with a 3 year tagging along the stroller… yep you get the picture, and we were parked in the very back of the lot.

I get in the door, still quick paced because the handicap door thing was broken and did not work, Shyla is not strong enough to hold open the door, so I had to pull the door and push the rig… I wait in line and finally get checked in. They have decided I need to update the forms.  How necessary is this really???  Paperwork every time we go in.  Do you have other insurance?  No, I don’t, and no I don’t work or have a work number either.  How about this….If I decide to get a job, and have insurance I will notify you, so you can bill them!

I start filling out the paperwork and Sean walks in the door, at the same time, my name is called!  I get back to my exam room, and he says “Oh this is set up for a women’s health exam, lets change rooms!”  Good thing, cause I was not prepared for that today!  We move rooms and he asks me how I am, and as usual I said, good but I think my blood pressure might be a BIT high~!

He took my blood pressure after I had been sitting for about 2 minutes and yep… high!  I was 159 over 105.  I think that, that qualified for a bit high.  It was now only 9:05.  Not bad for getting all the morning done that quick right!  I forgot to tell you, I forgot to pack Jaden’s lunch for school??!!  Really need to hurry and get his lunch back to him!  So the aide waited about 5 minutes came back into the room and took my pressure manually it was… lower!!  Yep, it went down to 148 over 98! Ok, I know that is still terrible, but it is much better than the first one.  Also I forgot to mention that I have been tracking my pressures at home and one of my highest ones were 132 over 86.  Much closer to normal right!  I forgot it at home on the table with my cuff, so i was not able to show it to the doctor when she came in!

Needless to say, when asked what medicine I was taking.. I had to admit…. I haven’t taken anything at all in about 2 or 3 wks.  I keep forgetting, I really am not doing it on purpose, I just have not got into a routine, with all this new things going on!

So, here is my new agenda, that has to start, and I am still going to be working regularly with the doctor!  First thing in the morning I will get up.  Swallow 3 pills.  Water pill (low dose to see if will help with BP), synthroid (thyroid), and Topomax (headache).  I have an appointment on Monday with the Neurologist (see if they can fix my numbness on my right side, and the damage to my shoulder), I need to make a new appointment with the new endocrinologist for my thyroid, I need to go have a EKG done (she said I will do this every year now, since I had the complications when I had Schyler), she sent through a consult for a nutritionist (because of BP), and then she said there is another specialist that will call to make some tests for the headaches.

Does this all sound like a plan or what???!!  So if you can and think of me!  Please pray for me to get a good routine down, I don’t think that anything is to serious with my health.  I think it is all just a lot of major neglect, that I need to get the ball rolling on some ME TIME!

So, now that all of that is done, I took lunch money to school, and had the girls fed, changed, baby fed and 2 of the 3 down for a nap all before 12~  Now, I am getting ready to do house work!

READY, SET, GO!!!!  Now that was an eventful day!  And I have 1 1/2 hours till I have to do PTO duty, which may just bring my BP even higher than this morning!!
